The GLBT Alliance denounces the appointment of Judge Neil Gorsuch by President Trump, as a replacement for Judge Antonin Scolia on the U.S. Supreme Court, that took place April 7, 2017. In March, a number of vital civil rights organizations and legal advocates came out in strong opposition to the nomination of Judge Gorsuch. The NAACP National Board of Directors, in their vote March 16 and subsequent Action Alert to oppose the Gorsuch nomination, stated “If confirmed to the U.S. Supreme Court, which is closely divided on many critical issues, Judge Gorsuch would be in a position tip the balance in a direction that would undermine many of our core rights and legal protections. He lacks the impartiality, the independence, and a respect for the basic civil rights and civil liberties of all people that we expect and deserve from the judicial system.”

                                          Lambda Legal, the nation’s first legal organization dedicated to achieving full equality for LGBTQ                                                 people, vehemently opposes the nomination of Judge Gorsuch to the U.S. Supreme Court. As the                                                 organization notes in their statement on Neil Gorsuch from January 31, 2017, titled Neil Gorsuch                                                 Has an Unacceptable, Hostile Record Towards LGBT People; “Judge Gorsuch’s opinion in the 10th                                                 Circuit Hobby Lobby decision is disqualifying,” said Rachel B. Tiven, CEO of Lambda Legal. “We                                                       absolutely must not confirm a Supreme Court nominee who has ruled that the religious beliefs of employers can trump the law. It is a short hop from birth control restrictions to restrictions on the intimate relationships and health care needs of LGBT people.”

U.S. Senators Kamala Harris and Dianne Feinstein were on our side. They stood up and voted no on appointing Neal Gorsuch, and supported the attempt to filibuster the vote on his nomination.
